From 29th November 2010, if you are applying for entry clearance to settle in the UK as a spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner, you must present with your application a certificate of competence in English language. (Dependants such as children are not included in this requirement).
The required standard is A1 on the “Common European Framework of Reference” – in practice this means that you should be able to understand familiar words and very basic phrases when people speak slowly and clearly and that you can ask and answer simple questions on very familiar topics and that you can use simple phrases and sentences to describe where you live and people you know.
We offer regular dates for testing, initially one day per week and the tests will be conducted at a convenient location in Pattaya
There is no reading or writing in the test, which takes about 10 minutes. Firstly, the examiner will ask you questions about yourself and everyday situations i.e. hobbies & routines. Then you will listen to an extract from a television programme. This will be read by the examiner, who will then ask you questions about what you hear. Finally, the examiner will give you a “role-play”, for example, you are making a phone call to enquire about a job and have a short conversation.
The examiner will only work from a script issued by EMD. The test is voice-recorded, and we send it to EMD who will mark it and (if you have passed) issue the certificate, which you can collect from the test centre or we will post it to you. The decision whether or not to issue a certificate is made by EMD alone.
