The Schengen member states - Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland - have jointly agreed about the rules concerning the movement of third-country nationals in their territories and decided which countries' citizens are required to present a visa. Furthermore, each Schengen State has decided which travel documents citizens of different third countries have to present upon entering the country.

The holder is exempt from the visa requirement if there is an entry other than "British citizen" on page one (1), and page five (5) contains the entry "holder has a right of abode in the United Kingdom" or there is an entry in the passport entitling the holder to enter The United Kingdom. The holder must have a visa if there is the entry "Holder is subject to control under the Immigration Act 1971" on page five (5).
EU-Passports: The holder of an EU Passport is exempt from the visa requirement if the cover of the passport is marked with "European Community" or "European Union" and the page for personal data contains the entry indicating that the holder is a "British citizen". The holder must have a visa, if the cover of the passport does not contain the entry "European Community" or "European Union" and if the holder is not a British citizen according to the page for personal data.
